Heat exchanger on Catalina 27 Universal m-18

Hey,
I noticed my heat exchange has a lot of salt buildup on the ends. I recently changed the zinc and water seems to be coming out the exhaust fine. Also no overheating problems.

Is this something I need to be concerned about? Any idea whatís causing it and what to do?

Thanks!

Just take off the end cap and clean it. A new gasket may, just may but not always, be required.

Thanks man. Iíve never taken apart a heat exchanger. Do I have to worry about coolant or water leaking out when I do that? I supposed I should close the freshwater thruhull valve?

Yeah, do turn off the supply before opening a hole in your boat. If that's salt, then the gasket is leaking salt water. That means a new gasket. You can go on line for the specific gasket, make your own from gasket paper, or mold one with gasket goo. Are you new to those tasks? If so, I will expand on my answer with instructions. Do clean out any calcium deposits (soak in vinegar) in the heat exchanger while you've got it apart.

Overall, it's time to get to know the insides of your heat exchanger.

Ok thanks for the tips. Yeah I am new to hear exchanges. I guess that means draining out all of the coolant in the engine? I check the coolant a few months ago and it was fine.

I'd suggest looking on utube. There are lots of vids on cleaning heat exchangers that are better than me trying to give you instructions.
+1 for what tkeithlu said otherwise
