The 2QM20 is a sleeved motor and parts are still available it may be an option to rebuild it . I did a 3QM30 a few years back and it is still going strong .

Re: Head Removal 2QM20 Diesel

Thanks Hartley.. I am considering just that.. Rebuilt motors are running around 4k here in the US. Sleeves and Pistons are available through Yanmar or do I need to find another source?

Sleeves and Pistons are available through Yanmar . I rebuilt mine as i knew the condition of the fuel pump etc . pumps can cost a bit to get rebuilt .

Re: Head Removal 2QM20 Diesel

The engine is a mystery... It is original to the boat but the boat has been sitting in saltwater and the seller was no help on the last time it ran. None of the instruments were connected so the hour meter is useless. I found a replacement, it a 2qm20h. I'm not sure what the differences are in the two motors. One year warranty on the new motor.

I'm going to pull this one out and take a look inside to see what the damage is and make a decision based on that. There was no head gasket installed on the original and the head is a mess.

Re: Head Removal 2QM20 Diesel

Personally I wouldn't rebuilt that engine. I smell a rat. Heck the injector pump will need rebuilding and I'm not sure how much that is but likely $1500 alone? Head rebuild probably $500-600... then there's the basic block....etc

Yep... I made that decision an hour ago.. I found a replacement engine with a warranty for 4k.. It's a 2qm20h.. I'm still unsure what the difference is.. I'm guessing the water pump?

I'm not sure either. Cant remember if the QM is the older heavier engine or the newer one.... someone on here knows though.

Re: Head Removal 2QM20 Diesel

That may be a good thing!
QM Series
The QM series was available either sea-water or fresh-water cooled. 2:1 or 3:1 transmissions. A designation of F near the end of the model means it is fresh-water cooled. F=Factory Fresh Water This series includes the following engines:
EngineHPYears In ProductionComments
2QM - originally only distributed in Japan
2QM15151977 - 19802 Cylinder
2QM20221975 - 1980Engines with serial numbers 0001 - 0030 were prototypes and may require different parts. Engines with serial numbers 80001 - 80930 and 81131 - 81180 were also different from the primary production models and may require different parts. Engines with serial numbers 80931 - 81130 and any serial number higher than 81181 will use standard 2QM20 parts.
2QM20(F)221975 - 19802 Cylinder
2QM20(H)221975 - 19802

Re: Head Removal 2QM20 Diesel

[QUOTE=Marktjski1;1845240]I just bought a money hole in the ocean. Anyone know a trick to removing the head on a Yanmar 2QM20. I have no idea the last time this engine ran but it is in pretty rough shape. I have added penetrating oil and I'm going to let it set over night.. Wish me luck.

Thank You..[/QU

HI I AM LOOKING FOR PARTS FOR 2QM20, ANY LUCK??

Re: Head Removal 2QM20 Diesel

I ended up buying a rebuilt 2qm20H from a place in Wisconsin. The engine was just finished and will be shipped Monday..

What parts are you looking for? Seems my local dealer can get many of them.. :-)
