Guide to Deciphering Yanmar parts catalog?

I think I've figured out most of the mysteries of the Yanmar parts catalog (see attached screenshots for example) but a few questions remain:
  • A few part numbers seem to be wrong or missing. Did they make undocumented changes? (surprising since the catalog is otherwise actually quite good). Or is there a revision newer than the May 2017 update I have for my 2002 4JH3-TE? (I would be surprised if May 2017 parts are no longer available)*
  • What is the "R" column? (after "I" column)
  • "Lev" column? Most parts are level (?) 1 but some are 2 or 3. What is that?
  • In one case a part number seems to be wrong - only one digit differs from the part actually available online. (119575-77510 in catalog is 719575-77510 online)
  • Minor mistakes are that they show some parts that are actually optional, but don't mark them optional (air heater in suction manifold).

Things I did figure out:
  • "-1" suffix on a part "No." indicates a newer part.
  • The "I" column has a key at the bottom indicating the codes for back/forwards compatibility on part changes.
  • "(D=E10799)" indicates the engine serial number they started including the newer part with. D = 4JH3-TE in this case (key is at top right).

Some parts have a month/year code instead - "(C=*2003.12)" indicates the newer part came after Dec 2003.

In some places they did "(A=E/#21955)" which I think is just an inconsistency - E/#21955 == E21955 (engine serial number).
  • And some tables (Fig 23) have "(D=EXXXXX) (E=EXXXXX)". What does EXXXXX mean in terms of engine serial number?

*The part that I can't find is 129470-77590, the air intake gasket between my turbo and engine body. One site says it's been replaced by 129150-77511, which is the air heater gasket, but my engine doesn't have an air heater, and this change isn't in the parts catalog, and that part number actually doesn't exist in the parts catalog at all (which has an index of all parts present in the engine). Odd.

Possibly an identical part made by a different manufacture. AFAIK, Yanmar issues a new part number if the OEM changes.

AFAIK, Yanmar uses the prefix 'E' for engines manufactured in Europe (Holland?) so EXXXXX means the initial serial number identifier begins with the letter 'E' followed by 5 numerical digits. Such an engine is of European origin.

Disclaimer - The above is what I believe but the information could be incorrect.

Re: Guide to Deciphering Yanmar parts catalog?

I just googled that part number and it comes up a business that has a bunch of yanmar uses for that part, if it is superceded click on "choose" and it will the new part number. FWIW
https://yanmarshop.com/en-GB/catalog...q=129470-77590 or 4JH3 TE in put in with part number it narrows it down. Still gives what you found. https://yanmarshop.com/en-GB/catalog...turbine-gasket

Re: Guide to Deciphering Yanmar parts catalog?

Thank you! yanmarshop.com's supercede info is useful. Previously I had only found this part replacement on dutchengineparts.nl.

A couple mysteries to decoding the catalog key still remain (not super important though):
- What is the "R" column? (after "I" column)
- "Lev" column? Most parts are level (?) 1 but some are 2 or 3. What is that?

The "R" column is for Remarks found at the bottom of the page; "Lev." distinguishes "main parts" from "sub components".

there's an explanatory page that accompanies some of the Yanmar parts catalogs; i've attached one from a 3GM30 catalog.

Thanks! My 4JH3-TE catalog doesn't have that directions page. That's exactly the type of key I was thinking it should have.

Section 4 of that also explains the EXXXXX debate we were having earlier. E doesn't stand for Europe, it stands for Engine No. and designates an engine serial number for a part change boundary. Dates can also be used (without E prefix).

And "XXXXX" or "ZZZZZ" means "parts could not be predicted or for engine models that could not be identified." Basically they don't know. Would've been clearer if they just put a question mark ('?') instead.
