gear box and prop shaft - couplings not meeting?

gear box and prop shaft - couplings not meeting?

clutch was slipping.
lifted engine, removed gearbox
took to the mechanics.
repaired
bolted engine and gearbox back together
lowered onto engine mounts

And now there is a gap : 1+1/2 inch ( 40mm )
between the coupling on the gear box
and the coupling on the Prop shaft
see photo

That obviously was not there before.

Have 'tapped' the prop coupling lightly with a hammer.
No obvious movement.

there is a nut sticking out of the bottom of that prop shaft coupling
I can feel it, but not see it
( photo attached )

Re: gear box and prop shaft - couplings not meeting?

Your shaft has slipped back. Normally you can pull it forward to meet the gear but I have seen a comealong required to do that on rare occasions.

That bolt you mention on the underside of of the shaft coupling goes into a dimple on the shaft and stops the shaft from moving in the coupling (normally also a key) You should be able to grasp the coupling and turn it 360 degrees altho the couplings should have been marked to keep the original holes lined up.

If you can't move the shaft try loosening the packing a bit.

Use a piece of threaded rod and a couple of nuts to pull them back together.

This may bring the coupling faces together, but you’re risking bending the flange faces.

The alignment is way out looks like a flexible coupling piece is missing ,if pulling the shaft fwd make sure it still turns ,⛵️⚓️

Out of alignment, question could be if you guys loose the bolts on engine mounts or the nuts?

I seriously doubt that one would be able to apply sufficient force using the short wrenches required to bend the flanges and if they don't pull together with fairly mild torque applied it will be obvious that something other than the shaft pushed back is wrong.

No response from the OP to questions. Guess he fixed it.

Pulled together easily, using some threaded rod, cut to length.

Getting the nuts on in that TINY space was not %@#$& easy but.

Oh - and 'No reply'? Some of us are living on boats without access to fast internet. Our privilege can be hard to spot. As an old wealthy white man? Ask me how I know.

Re: gear box and prop shaft - couplings not meeting?

I have exactly the same problem with internet.
Did the alignment resolve itself when the coupling gap closed up a bit or did you have to move the engine a bit? Can you now turn the shaft more easily? What gearbox is that?Just curious!
