Gasket Material - What Type?

sea water cooled (yanmar 2qm20) engine - I've been using automotive gasket paper to make gaskets and im not happy with the performance - combination of sea water, chemical reactions(anodes) seems to cause a certain amount of - osmotic - bleeding through the waterway gaskets. I'm trying to source some nitrile rubber infused material but i thought id put the question on here first...whats the best gasket material recommended?

Nitrile would be good for water. Try to find a local gasket cutter that makes gaskets for industrial use. They are all over the world and cater to industrial customers. They probably have some in stock in a variety of thicknesses. comes in sheets.

Have you tried coating the gasket with silicon sealant?I have used this method many times with the thin paper gaskets

Try looking at McMaster-Carr. They have many types of sheet gaskets and other suitable materials. Also, many auto parts shops carry sheet gasket materials.

Re: Gasket Material - What Type?

Yanmar recommends liquid gasket, specifically Three Bond brand:

Three Bond #1 (TB1101): Non-drying liquid gasket; solvent less type, easy to remove, superior in seawater resistance, applicable to various mating surfaces.

They also make others (TB1102, etc.)

In U.S., Permatex is a more common brand.
