Gasket and seal for exhaust elbows

On my Yanmar 4JH57 I am checking the exhaust elbows and noticed some leakage between the gasket and the engine block. I'll replace the gasket once I get them shipped. In the meantime I scraped the gasket and block clean. Should I smear a thin layer of muffler sealant, like Permatex 80335 Muffler and Tailpipe Sealer, to improve the seal? Or, is this just overkill?
