Sorry for my ignorance, but I'm not quite sure how this would work. Would the excess fuel then run only back to the filter?

yes,
It makes for a cleaner installation, without extra t's and hose clamps. This makes every run of hose continuous run with minimal chance for leaks.

If you use a 200 series there are two inlets and one outlet. Problem solved.
Wish I had thought of that before plumbing a return line under the cockpit etc. I ended up teeing into the breather line. Oh well, maybe the next boat will be perfect - hang on, this is the next boat .
