Fuel pump ?

Boat at the dock. The engine started fine and running well up to 1200-1400 rpm but not higher then stopped as if running out of fuel. Tank 70%full. Fuel is 5+ y old. I emptied the tank, Bottom clean. Fuel Line is clear. I replaced the fuel filters (engine and water separator) filled water separator with fresh fuel, engine runs perfectly. It will not pull fuel from the tank. Bad fuel pump? Do I need to prime the fuel line from tank to water separator filter?

Re: Fuel pump ?

Most likely yes. Can probably be done most easily with inexpensive squeeze bulb type transfer hose or similar. Available most auto parts stores.

Re: Fuel pump ?

How can anybody answer this question knowing NOTHING about this engine? You don't even know if it is gas or diesel. how big, the geometry of the plumbing or anything.

More likely than the pump is a simple suction side air leak, but we can't even begin to guess with NO information...

Re: Fuel pump ?

How clean is the inside of the diesel tank? I am thinking the extra revs sucked something into the pickup pipe. The dinghy pump will be your friend here to blow back through the pipe to ensure its clear.

Re: Fuel pump ?

Umm, probably because re-priming is a normal requirement on most fuel systems regardless of gas or diesel after replacing filters.

OP stated refilling the filter housing started the engine which leaves the remaining line from tank to filter as the probable culprit.
