My opinion on flolding props is pretty low when it comes to using them on anything other than a raceboat. They are generally a compromise in powering and with extended use (ie on a cruising boat) they wear and begin to rattle and cause vibration. Better choice would be a well made feathering prop. Not quite as big of a reduction in drag but they retain all (or at least nearly all) of the perfomance when motoring of a fixed prop and many outperform in reverse when it comes to prop walk. That being said they are also significantly more expensive. I have used folding props on
race boats and they are the way to go but no one intends to do any significant motoring or motorsailing like when trying to
claw off a lee shore in heavy
weather with a
race boat.
