External and Internal Regulator both hooked up- Help!

We had a dead alternator on our Universal M-25 while sailing in the VI... The boatyard replaced it with a Mondo(type) 65a alternator, which it took them a while to get working. I made sure they knew we had an External Balmar regulator, but after closer inspection (later), it appears that to get it working they simply hooked up the built-in/internal regulator to the external Balmar.
Until we get this worked out, it this OK to run this way? (And what would you guess are the consequences for charging?)
Also, we naturally want to use the Balmar/external ... Does anyone know whether Mondo has a kit/cover for removing the internal regulator?
Thanks.
