Question Re: Experience with non-OEM starter motors?

Any wisdom out there on the number of teeth the pinion gear on a Yanmar 171008-77010 starter has. This is for a 2006 (4JH3-TE) Engine.

Re: Experience with non-OEM starter motors?

I've used aftermarket parts on outboards, inboards, cars, trucks, etc and have been happy with the results. When you can get aftermarket parts for 20% of the cost of OEM parts, it's hard not to try them. Some aftermarket parts are even better than OEM.

A replacement for the original Hitachi S114 – 303 looks to be about $400, but I can get a "Strike Power" non-OEM starter from Charge-n-Start for about a hundred dollars. I also saw that API Marine appears to make a starter but they charge about $250. Looking closely at the picture of the API starter, I could see a visible defect in the main casting, so they're out. Comments?

TIA

I put two of those Chinese made starters into Yanmar engines when I was a fleet manager because they were so cheap. They BOTH failed within 6 months. The castings cracked and we were very lucky the fragments didn't destroy the flywheel.

I would NEVER go that route again...
