Estimate on 2002 Cruiser 3750MY/Crusader 8.1 H.O.

Hello,
We received an estimate for work, that our mechanics recommends, prior to boat being driven . We are trying to get the boat to the yard, to have it cleaned and painted. I would like to confirm that we are not being overcharged for the parts or anticipated labor. Our plan was to get the boat started, hull cleaned and assessed prior to moving forward with any major mechanical items; however, the mechanic recommends the following is addressed first:
Estimate:
Labor: Exhaust risers cooling passages are clogged with rust on both engines. Replace all risers,
clean out elbow cooling passages, reassemble with new gaskets and paint as needed.
$1,540.00
Labor: Both sea water pumps are leaking badly. Replace both sea water pumps.
$275.00
Labor: U-coolers have some restriction of sea water but will probably be ok for now.
Replace U-cooler coolant hose clamps.
$33.00
PARTS:
Non Listed Item Exhaust risers $639.80T
98124 Turbulator plate, solid, Crusader,PCM $33.00T
98127 Exhaust elbow gaskets, center port, Crusader,PCM $91.20T
4 10-101 Coolant, extended life, Orange 25.00 100.00T
1 00-5023 Crusader blue, spray paint $11.10T
2 Non Listed Item RA057028 Sea water pump $1,038.00T
2 Oil disposal Coolant disposal $20.00
1 Shop supplies Misc. shop supplies $20.00
1 Shipping Shipping charges, Trans pac $40.00

Thank you.

A quick internet search for the pump found a new pump for $400. That would make the quote on 2 for $1000 is a reasonable markup. The labor looks ok. There could be a couple days work. Since it's a gas engine, take autoshop and save some money.
There is a site with a forum dedicated to Crusader: Outboard Motors, Boat Parts, Marine Engines, Inboard Boat Motor

What do you mean take it to an autoshop? Are you suggesting that we remove the engine and take it to an auto shop to have them work on it, and then install it back into the boat?

He meant take a class (auto shop) and do your own work.....the savings are extreme!

$33 to replace two hose clamps seems a bit excessive, as does the $20 charge for oil and coolant disposal. But I agree with the previous post - learn how to do your own work, save a ton of money, and get better quality of work, too.
