Re: EPA on New Engines- repowering

Thank you for all of your help. Since we definitely need to Repower, and there are no Yanmar-certified mechanics we could find in Southeast Alaska, we will repower using a knowledgeable mechanic with an engine what will best work for our boat and space below. We tried to get farther south, but we had to turn back due to... engine failure. We have an ancient 1987 Yanmar 4JH-HTE with a turbo charge that has close to 9000 hours. We will more than likely repower with a Beta.

If someone was to own a brand new yanmar 3jh5e. In Florida. Would it be legal to sale. Being that person is not a dealer.

Yes. For the most part, EPA rules cover manufacturing and importation. The engine has already made it into the country.

I would urge you to be very careful when looking at Betamarine. They over rate their engines by a large margin.

We put a Beta 75 in a 50 footer to replace a Perkins 4236 85 hp. When we ordered the new prop it would not turn the prop. We ended up going down 2 inches from the specified size.

Why?

Well turns out Beta bought a 49.8 kw boat motor which is 66 hp and called it a 75. Now I am faced with running a too small motor which consumes too much fuel because it is being run too hard and it will not even come close to hull speed and with the old motor it could do well north of hull speed.

They also took my motor to a boat show. Promised me spare parts. It took 1 yr to get those spare parts out of them.

In my opinion a completely unethical company.

And we are now faced with repowering again and it will be expensive.
