Engine driven bilge pump squeals loudly

Hi All,
Our emergency bilge pump is belted onto the engine with an electric clutch. A Jabsco 50200-2311.

I tried to use it a few days ago and it squeals super loud. It also didn't appear to work, but maybe that's because I had the (very complicated) bilge selection valves setup wrong.

I assumed the impeller was busted, but just checked it and it is fine. I confirmed it spins by engaging the clutch for half an instant with the cover plate off. The cover plate has a generous amount of salty bronze crud build up, which I am cleaning off now with a vinegar soak.

What's the most likely cause of this noise -- the bearing?

Thanks!

Matt

For an emergency bilge pump the noise is secondary. In a real emergency the pump is water lubricated anyway 😀

Re: Engine driven bilge pump squeals loudly

Are these belt driven pumps generally loud? I want it to work well if I need it, and am guessing the squealing means there's something wrong with it? Is it ghetto to spray WD40 on the bearings?

Could it be belt slipping?

Re: Engine driven bilge pump squeals loudly

Squealing is usually the belt. Rarely a dry pump. I use water proof grease on the impeller housing (anywhere the impeller rubs) whenever I have them open (about once a year). My impellers on 2 mains, 2 generators and 2 engine driven bilge pumps all were replaced in 2011. Still look and work fine. About 500hrs/yr. on the mains and 1/2 that on the generators. Bearings are usually bronze bushings and made to water lubricate. Better, bigger pumps use sealed pre-lubed roller bearings.
WD-40 has very little lubrication properties. WD stands for water displacement. It came about after a Texas hurricane to get water out of electric equipment.

If belt is glazed or age hardened ,tightnening may not help much. Replace as part of maintenance and peace of mind.

Squealing is usually the belts slipping. You can buy a spray can of anti belt slip which is very effective and should always be in your toolkit.

Make sure outlet is clear. Often these pumps will squeal if they are running dry--or if the inlet is blocked.
