Re: engine alarm upon turning key

A quick google of Yanmar marine OBD brings up several hits, this being one, it seems to be a Yanmar part, but I have no idea as to cost.

THANKS!!

What I’m saying is that your oil pressure and water temperature gauges may all be reading cOrrectly, yet a loose wire on another sensor (switch) for the alarms may be loose.

Re: engine alarm upon turning key

As an engineer in building systems, I have always marveled at the phrase:

"The alarm went off."

When the alarm goes off, it should mean that the noise stopped.

It unfortunately is misused altogether too often.

Re: engine alarm upon turning key

If it is a brand new engine don't you have a dealer/installer to ask?

I agree that it is probably the oil pressure alarm. Even a sophisticated, electronically controlled engine has to monitor the oil pressure. Oil level has nothing to do with oil pressure other than it has to have oil to get pumped when the engine is running.

Re: engine alarm upon turning key

yes - have already left messages - But no one is open over the weekend and we missed two fabulous days on the water - and have a very short season here in Maine - so figured we'd ask this very knowledgeable group for advice.

thanks!!

Ah those new engines, they are technologically so woke don't ya know. I love the companies that are still building basic engines that they advertise as having "NO COMPUTERS - ALL MECHANICAL."

I'll bet this one has a sail drive with all electrics, electronics and navigation on a cool backbone where if one item goes Tango-Uniform they the all go Tango-Uniform. And "touch screens" in the middle of the night out in a real blow, forget about it.

Re: engine alarm upon turning key

I had a similar issue with my Westerbeke 30b3. Turned out that my oil pressure sending unit had come un-attached while I was wrestling with the batteries. Yours may have a loose connection which is why it's working sporadically. Locate yours and make sure it's tight before you continue diagnosing. Good luck.

Re: engine alarm upon turning key

Is it an audible alarm, or just a check engine light?
I assume there may be two levels of alarms, important ones like overheat and low oil pressure would be audible, and required emission alarms would trip the light.
In other words I’d operate the boat, especially if I had temp and oil PSI gauges if it was just a light, without the audible alarm.

Re: engine alarm upon turning key

My Atomic 4 did the same thing, but consistently. I wired in a switch to turn off the alarm until the engine was actually running. Otherwise I couldn't hear it start over the buzzer.

Intermittent failures are always toughest.

If that link is the engine control panel model that you have page 8 of the manual describes 3 levels of alarm.

The engine control panel listed appears to perform in many ways like my OBD automotive code reader with access to real time sensors and code log.
Though the manual states a code will cease display when not present accessing the log list should hopefully indicate the code and reveal its severity and cause.

Personally, I'll stick to my raw cooled 2GM . WOW thats a lot of tech.

Hope You Get Out Soon.

Re: engine alarm upon turning key

I had a similar issue that involved how the engine was shut down rather than how it was started. After pushing the stop button, I had to push and hold the power button until the led went blank and all power to the gauge went out. To assure that was done, I also turned off the switch for the ECU ( electronic control unit) located near the battery box, and then turned the battery control to off. The added benefit is that the ECU was no longer drawing power off the starter battery. Hope this helps

go to the oil pressure sensor and disconnect it to try it out. if the alarm still sounds, ground the wire and recheck it. then let us know what happens.
