Edson single lever engine control box

I have a 10yr old Edson single lever control box mounted on pedestal rail.
I would like to split the box to inspect the interior mechanism and cable ends.
Splitting the casing looks simple with 4 screws securing the 2 halves. it appears that the control lever needs to be removed to allow box to split.
I have removed the rubber plug from handle, removed the detent button sitting under it and removed the hollow bolt from handle hub.
The lever is still firmly attached. Am i approaching this the right way? I have been unable to find exploded diagrams or any instructions whatsoever!

Try “edsonmarine.com” click on “support”. There they have numerous installation bulletins, perhaps #FB 395 is for your product.

Or call 508-995-9711 and ask for tech support.

Re: Edson single lever engine control box

I just did this. The lever is splined and attaches to a splined shaft. It had corroded and was badly stuck.

Ultimately I purchased this puller specifically for the purpose of getting it apart:

I replaced the hollow center bolt in the engine control with a solid one and loosened it one turn, then applied the puller. It took a great deal of force and I was afraid I was going to break something, but I did get the handle off in one piece. I fussed around cleaning and greasing the engine control, but ultimately was unable to get it to work smoothly. I have a replacement on order.

The puller barely fit. I had to cut apart the plastic washer between the handle and the plastic housing to make room.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

Re: Edson single lever engine control box

Thanks for the detailed and very relevant info. Greatly appreciated. I think I'll warm it up a bit with heat gun as well if it proves to be especially resistant. I have a real phobia of cable/control failure especially in the marina!

That's wise.

We were, how shall we say, part of the entertainment while docking which led to the decision to pull the control box apart. I had thought we were in neutral while we were in fact in gear (forward).
