Thanks, I have been in contact with them and many others in the same business.

The funny thing is, if I had a 6cyl to replace, this whole process would have been easy, and very inexpensive. I have come across several runners that were almost being given away. Came across some good runners for $1500-2500 with low hours. There was also a fully rebuilt, 100% complete, 0 hours, 120hp Lehman for $6900. I even found a NEW John Deer 140hp 6cyl for under $12K. But none of those will fit in my space.

But when it comes to 4cyl, especially in the 70-100hp range, people want astronomical prices: 24-year old used Yanmar $9000, 22-year old John Deere $8700, 55-year old Detroit $9500, 30-year old Westerbroke $8500, 19-year old Volvo $11,500, and these are typical prices I have found, and none of them were rebuilt. Crazy. They can only get these prices so long as people are willing to pay those prices. I am not one of them.

That is crazy. I rebuilt my Westerbeke 50 (4cyl) myself 14 years ago and it really wasn't bad. Need a garage, shop manual, good source for parts and a good machine shop. After I found out my motor was based on a British BMC 1.8L diesel, things got much cheaper...no Westerbeke parts. You can pay the mechine shop to do the short block assembly. Then add the head and accessories and reinstall. Good winter project.

Problem is the nearest machine shop is 6 hours away, and my shop is 2600 miles from the boat, otherwise I would do it myself.

Re: Drop-in Replacement for Ford Lehman

For those interested, I have solidified a deal on a complete running replacement Ford Lehman 2712E with 900 hours - $2500 from an individual. This is in line with what I would expect.

Thanks for your comments and suggestions.

I found this on Ebay which might be of help. Interesting that the seller is offering multiple configurations.
