This is Stant’s FAQ, and I trust Stant myself.

Well Stant need to get with the 21st century. MotoRad thermostats have a dual action and lock open with an overheat.

Your right. They lock open with an overheat, if and only if they happen to be open, but if they are failed closed, they stay closed, there is no device that will open them.
Read Stant’s FAQ, that’s covered, and why I put the link here

Re: Does anyone replace thermostat...

They have a second spring that pushes the valve open, just like the one that pushes it closed.

Re: Does anyone replace thermostat...

I've read that twice now. The ace mechanic a few post back said they "never fail in the closed position". The dual spring unit would drive the valve all the way open when it got hot.
