Re: Diesel Repair is so simple, why hire anyone

Most pundits on this forum don't know where the dipstck is located on their diesels.
So, good luck

What's a "dipstck"? Can't find it unless ya know what it is.

Until you get to resetting the timing on an injector pump.

I saw one video of head resurfacing in Vietnam with a person standing on the head as his buddies slide it back and forth across a grinding surface of some sort.

Scariest part is that this is probably the same crew maintaining the airliners over there.
Under primitive conditions that sounds like an excellent way to lap a head, but that would involve a LOT of the pulling and pushing thing. Maybe they could harness some water buffalo to do that? And pile sandbags on the head instead of standing on it.

The lapping surface obviously has to be very flat. The action of the abrasive would eventually make the flat surface no longer flat. It's all about what your tolerances are. ANd without a calibrated granite surface plate, you can't accurately measure that, anyway.

After reassembly of the engine, the first full power run and compression test will tell the story, of whether the lapping was successful or not.

Nice. I bet you can get a "rebuilt" truck or tractor engine for just a couple hundred bucks over scrap iron value.

One encouraging thing is that they did not act surprised at all when it started and ran successfully. That's a good thing, yeah.

At college we sanded flat a warped head on a rover k series, with nothing more than a surface plate and sheets of enemy cloth, then did the head without an angle torque gauge, at least a little outside of the guidelines.
