Could be a combination of a lot of things like make and model of engine and of glow plugs.

Congratulations on solving the starting problem! I bet a propane torch would work too, and without 120 volt power. Now my question is, how are the holes plugged? They are certainly plugged, or you could get no compression, no matter how hot the intake air. I would suggest cleaning the area well, and getting up close with good light, to inspect the holes.
I've found I can start my Universal Model 40 without using the glow plugs, using a tiny brief whisper of ether starting fluid. I emphasize BRIEF, less than half a second, while cranking. That's all it takes. Flame suit ready!

I just wanted to give a big thanks to ALL that responded to this thread. I dont know the bible that well but one vs I do know. A wise man seeks counsel. A foolish man is right in his own mind. Well this wasnt really the case. Didnt matter if I was right or not, motor was killing my starter. lol
