Diesel Identification Help!

Hi Everyone!

I just was given a 27' sloop with an inboard diesel engine that hasnt run in at least 2 years. I'm going to restore it and get it working, however being new to diesel motors in general, I'm having trouble even figuring out the make/model of it! I've attached some pictures, anyone have an idea?

Thanks!

Alex

Re: Diesel Identification Help!

Based on the heat exchanger, layout of the injector system, location of the injector pump, location of the oil filter it looks very much like my Volvo MD2010 (2 cylinder).

I am no engine identificaiton expert but I'd call it a 3-cyl Volvo, MDseries.

Can you get a part number of any OEM hardware? If so go here

Volvo Penta, Mercruiser and more - Marine Parts Express - engines, outdrives, propellers

And drop the P/N in their parts locator. They also have awesome engine schematics and IPCs. You could hunt and peck the different calatogs.

A picture of the rear left would help - Exhaust header and if there is a relay box there...

Re: Diesel Identification Help!

Based on the engine color and the gearbox that is a Perkins M20, 25 , or 30. Probably an M20 because of the boat size. This motor was made for Perkins By ISM in Japan and is also marinized by Volvo in their MD2020, 2030, 2040. You can download a service manual here; http://wilfredmacdonald.com/parts/perkins.pdf

The base engine is very common and is much used in agricultural applications; most internal parts, and many of the external ones, are the same.

Does it spin? Don't try to start it without changing fuel filters, checking oil and water levels and having a clean source of fuel other than in the tanks.

Are you certain you need to rebuild it?

Re: Diesel Identification Help!

They found one of these motors buried in the ashes of Vesuvius and it started right up. Just smoked a little on start up for ten seconds

Sent from an undisclosed location on the high seas or from the lounge chair by the pool, you decide.

Re: Diesel Identification Help!

I've seen a valve adjustment on non-running diesels, start it singing again.
