Damper plate failure

Hello,
I have a Morgan 462 with a Westerbeke 82b four. Last year my Damper plate failed and I replaced it with an oem part. Almost exactly a year later it has failed again. What are the odds we got a bad part vs. it being an indication of something else wrong?

We have put several hundred hrs on it in the last year, both as a seasonal charter boat and a trip to the bahamas. I don't know the exact amount of hrs. When under charter we run at cruising speed for a few hrs at a time in between snorkeling etc, not long periods of idle or low speed use. We had already owned the boat for 2 years prior to the Damper plate going out, and used it pretty much the same during that time.

Could it be the transmission going bad? Alignment issues? Any place to look would be helpful, I don't want to make pulling the tranny an annual thing...

Sounds like something is out of alignment.

Re: Damper plate failure

If you are using a spring type damper, convert to a softer composite type damper which does not use metal springs. The old fashion spring type are not forgiving and generally not the best choice if a composite will fit. Some composite dampers will allow you to replace the element when it wears out. Which should be on the high side of 5000 hours.

Maybe you had a charter captain or two who did a bit of slam shifting back and forth with the engine at high RPM? Twice as likely if this is a two lever control system.
