D1-30f Perkins Injection Pump Oil?

Searching another problem I noticed a fill cap on top of the fuel injection pump hidden behind some raw water hoses. I took it off and found it to be pretty much dry, just a thin layer of oil on the bottom. I cannot find any documentation for it, it has a Perkins tag on the front. Does anyone know what grade oil and level it should be? No dipstick, just a notch at the bottom of the filler cap threads that seems to indicate the level.

That is your crankcase oil fill port. Check he level with the dipstick.
The injection pump shares oil with the engine for the lower parts. Then the fuel circuits are lubed by the fuel.

SY Harmony, the crankcase fill port is on top of the engine on the valve cover. Just changed it. This is a separate port.

Engines can have multiple fill ports. Thats very common.
If you look inside it shows the timing gears and an open area at the bottom into the pan.

Yeah, I saw the gears but no opening to the crankcase, just that thin layer of oil on the bottom. I will look closer.

Re: D1-30f Perkins Injection Pump Oil?

Harmony has it correct.....

The prior 30 h.p. model, the MD 2030 had only one oil fill opening, the one in the valve cover. With the introduction of the D1-30 engine and the new shaped timing case, the decision was taken by VP to include the oil fill opening in the timing case as well as in the valve cover. This location is used in most industrial applications of this engine, and it also comes in handy in some marine applications where space is limited above the engine. You can add oil from either location, it all ends up in the oil pan.

Re: D1-30f Perkins Injection Pump Oil?

Some inline injection pumps definitely DO have thier own oil supply. My old Albin AD2 had it's own supply, separate from the crankcase. The oil grade was the same as the crankcase, in this case straight 30 weight. You could try putting a few ounces in the pump and see if the visible level rises. If not, it went into the crankcase. If you're due for an oil change anyway, try refilling it through the pump. If it only takes a few ounces, it's a separate supply.
I wouldn't run it until you figure this out. Running the pump dry would be a bad thing.
