cylinder not fireing

my engine started smoking black exhaust loosing power new something was wrong.while engine was running i loosened injectors one at a time. each cylinder would stall engine except one. i thought injector was bad had it checked out not the injector. figured the pump was bad had pump rebuilt (very expensive) cylinder still not firing.can i check the compression through the glow plug hole my deisel tester adapter won't fit in injector hole. i have one that fits glow plug hole but the end that go,s in block has a air hose type fitting like for filling tires up will that work

Re: cylinder not fireing

There should be a valve on the adapter that goes in the block. Yes if the glow plug adapter fits it should work. The best way to check compression on a diesel is by taking all of the injectors our. You want you engine to spin fast to get a good reading.

Pull the rocker cover & check the rockers, pushrods & valve springs on that cylinder, may find the problem there.

Pulled cover off did,nt see anything wrong they looked ok same as other three.was hopping that maybe a rocker popped of but no .all the same.compression readings today.thinking maybe a burnt valve. better that than a ring problem.thanks for the info.

I had the injector pump rebuilt and injector checked.with the fuel lines unhooked fuel sprays out that cylinder as much as the other ones.

Re: cylinder not fireing

If you have fuel at the injector, then you either low or no compression in that cylinder. cus if theres fuel and compression theres fire!. go back to the compression ck and ck the rockers and valve adjustment again, cus you must have an internal problem! make sure the valve clearences are correct, and the pushrods are going up and down the same cus Ive even seen a worn camshaft in this model engine a couple of times. Start with the compression ck and go from there ! my daddy always told me start at the commpression ck. Im sure its fixable

What if your obstructing air intake? Seems like number 2 is checking okay. Good compression and valve clearance is okay. Maybe a seal but thought that wilts show in a compression test.

Re: cylinder not fireing

My engine (Westerbeke 27) started to fire up roughly and then finally died. I spent way too much time and $$$ (including replacing injectors) trying to figure out why before I made the leap to electric propulsion. I sold the dead engine to a fellow who rebuilt it. Cost him $3,500 and he did all the work himself. He told me what had happened. Seems the head gasket leaked water onto one of the cylinders I suspect this is what caused the rough starting. The engine was probably running on three cylinders until the water finally cracked the cylinder head. So you might want to inspect/replace the head gasket after doing the compression test.
