Cooling Water Strainer Yanmar 2GM

I'd like to install a cooling water intake strainer on my Yanmar 2GM -(sea water cooled) but am unsure what size / model of strainer might be suitable. Hose dia to the water pump is 1/2" 13mm... Would a 1/2" size model have sufficient flow capability and low enough pressure drop? Does it matter that it cannot be installed above water level ?
thanks
