Aargh! I should have stayed quiet. Part of me says replace it now and part of me says it's probably fine and certainly better than a new plastic device.

I had no such dilemma on our boat, we had a plastic strainer and it looked and felt tired.

But I do feel the barbed tails at least should be replaced.

One of my customer's boats had a strainer similar to that antique. Late last fall the darn thing broke off while trying to close the valve during decommissioning. I strongly suggest you replace it with a proper flanged seacock and separate strainer. The green stuff you have there now is telling you something...

Err... if you check the photo, you will notice that it is separate.
And what exactly is the green telling us?
