took the mack boring
yanmar 3 day owners maintenance class on my
yanmar 2GM20F. (not offered for any other
engine as they a re the east coast yanmar distributor..) best $600 i ever spent. 1st day is routine change your oil/impeller/antifreeze stuff. 2nd and 3rd days are troubleshooting and adjusting timing and valve stuff etc. hands on, working on your own model
engine, with a trained tech wizard standing by to supervise,,,after that 3 day class --taken 2001-- i have NEVER had to call a
mechanic for anything on my
boats AND have correctly diagnosed a fair number of
diesel related problems for friends and neighbors. i do all the routine maintenance antifreeze/impeller stuff plus mixing
elbow swaps, valve adjustments, alt belt
replacements,
cooling pump replacements, engine mt replacements, and the like. probably saved $5K in mechanics
fees over the last 10 years..
with mechanics getting $110 an hour plus travel time , the cost of the course $600 is about 1/2 what other people pay each year to have a
mechanic do routine maintenance and winterize the
boat... do yourself a favor , buy and read the
service manual and
parts manual for your specific engine from your local yanmar dealer BEFORE coming to the course...
next course is at mack boring headquarters, union NJ the week of nov 1 thru 5. 2010. MTW is a 3 day basic followed by a 2 day advanced. there may also be a more convenient course for you idahoeans running out of chicago, call mack boring 908-964-0700.
fair winds to you.
