Change primary fuel filter to top loading canister

I've got Nanni 3.75 HE engines (20 hp, 3 cylinder) in my catamaran. The primary (or secondary, depending on vernacular I guess) fuel filter is a Ryco R2132P where its the (from the top) housing, filter, then glass bowl. I think they may generically be called CAV filters? One of these:

Anyways, I hate changing this filter because no matter how much fuel I try to drain out and no matter what bucket I try to use to catch the filter and bowl as I unscrew them, diesel gets everywhere. And I feel like it's just a matter of time until I drop the glass bowl and it breaks. Is it possible for me to change to one of the fuel filters that loads the cartridge in from the top, like this:

I feel like life would be a lot easier if I could simply unscrew the top, pop the old filter out, drop a new filter in, and maybe add a couple hundred mills of diesel to top up the filter before screwing the top back on.

Are there certain parameters that I need to look at when choosing a new filter housing? Or at 20 hp am I stuck with the CAV style filter?

CAV style fuel filters have been around since for ever and are found ANYWHERE there is a diesel engine of any type! But they are a pain to change and have unique sealing rings.

There are also many thousands of spin on type fuel filters which are way easier to change out.

You are not limited to any particular filter for your 20hp Nanni.

Try searching for a spin on diesel filter with a water separation bowl.

I see you are in Sydney. Look for Off Road Equipment suppliers or google Ryco or Sakura or some of the huge range of filter suppliers for the mining industry.

The biggest problem will be making a choice among the hundreds of spin on filters that are available.

Here are a couple of sites that I have used in the past and of course, eBay has 'everything'.

Re: Change primary fuel filter to top loading canister

The Scintex housing is a turbo meaning it creates a spinning motion that helps separate air and debris in the fuel if the flow is high enough. Figure out your fuel flow and get a housing that is rated for your flow + about 25%.
Some engines return a lot of fuel to the tank and some barely return any. That's part of the flow. If the housing is too big the fuel just flows slowly thru the housing and you don't get the turbo effect. It still filters fuel.
Scintex looks to be a Racor Chinese copy. Racor style is the most used marine filter.
