I've got Nanni 3.75 HE engines (20 hp, 3 cylinder) in my
catamaran. The primary (or secondary, depending on vernacular I guess)
fuel filter is a Ryco R2132P where its the (from the top) housing, filter, then glass bowl. I think they may generically be called CAV filters? One of these:

Anyways, I hate changing this filter because no matter how much
fuel I try to drain out and no matter what bucket I try to use to catch the filter and bowl as I unscrew them,
diesel gets everywhere. And I feel like it's just a matter of time until I drop the glass bowl and it breaks. Is it possible for me to change to one of the
fuel filters that loads the cartridge in from the top, like this:

I feel like life would be a lot easier if I could simply unscrew the top, pop the old filter out, drop a new filter in, and maybe add a couple hundred mills of
diesel to top up the filter before screwing the top back on.
Are there certain parameters that I need to look at when choosing a new filter housing? Or at 20 hp am I stuck with the CAV style filter?
