Can anyone help identify what this is?

I recently bought my first boat. A 24ft Roberts design. I pulled this off it today and have no idea what it is/for. Is it an awning or a drift anchor?Click image for larger version

Looks like a boom tent, for shade/shelter at anchor...

It looks like its anything you think you can use it for. All of the above guesses are as good as any others, unless the maker comes in and identifies it.

Well, it needs cleaning!

It looks like a shade awning.

The ends with the PVC tubing go athwartships with the flaps at the aft end.

Probably made of Sunbrella, check their website for cleaning instructions.

Re: Can anyone help identify what this is?

It is a boom tent (as noted already). Tie the two lines in the center of the batten to the topping lift, tie the side lines down to the lifelines, grab a cold one, and relax in the shade.

Re: Can anyone help identify what this is?

My bet is that it is an awning that crosses over the boom and ties down on the toe rail or something of that nature. It looks to have rods through the end edges to support the material.

To me, it looks like a collision mat. It's designed to help survive a holing to the hull of your boat.

So many good uses for a bit of canvas! I'll add a tie down to throw over the spinnaker when you drop it on the foredeck to keep it tidy!

As others have said, it looks like a boom awning.

Here is a photo of ours in use in case that is helpful...

Cheers!

Re: Can anyone help identify what this is?

Cockpit cover/boom tent. Tapered to match the taper of the boat aft.

Re: Can anyone help identify what this is?

Gruss Gott Delay,

You've gotten good answers. To be certain if it is a cockpit awning just rig it over the boom with the ends of the battens tied off on the lifelines then adjust it fore and aft to see how it fits and keeps the sun and rain off you.

Welcome

Are you truly living in Esslingen?

I have fond memories of living in Stuttgart back in the early 70s. I used to watch the small dinghies race in a little lake off the Neckar back in those days and took my first sailing class at Chiemsee.

kind regards,
