Unhappy BMW D50

I am looking for a thermostat for the D50. Does anyone know where I might source one or if it actually needs to be the specific type or can it be replaced by an off the shelf unit.?🤔

Re: BMW D50

Is your engine Fresh or Raw water cooled? They’ll have different opening temperatures.
Brand shouldn't matter, as long as you match diameter, and temperature.

BMW ‘D50' Parts:
Thermostat (Raw Water Cooled ) #1711 1329 391
Thermostat (Fresh Water Cooled) #1153 1328 591
Workshop Manual ➥ http://www.bmwmarine.org/media/d35_d50_work_man.pdf
Parts Catalogue ➥ http://www.bmwmarine.org/media/BMWD35D50_part_cat.PDF

Raw water cooled engines, that run in salt water, typically use ± 140 F (60C) opening thermostats; while closed fresh water cooling systems, often use 160F ‘stat, and will be fully open at approximately 180°F.

Re: BMW D50

Thank you for that. The engine is both raw & fresh water cooled. It is the fresh water thermostat which may be faulty. Part # 11531328591. I have had this motor for nearly 30 years & have found parts increasingly difficult to obtain. Hence being cautious about taking things apart before sourcing replacements!

Re: BMW D50

Tommee, try and find a Hatz dealer for parts. Our previous boat had a D35, and that worked for us, but it WAS a long time ago.

Re: BMW D50

I’m with Gord, I bet if you take it to an Auto parts store you will find a match.
Opening temp should be written on the Thermostat, do NOT go with a modern auto 195f thermostat as I bet the one for your engine is more likely something a lot lower temp.

By being fresh and raw water cooled, we refer to them as fresh water cooled
I have only seen a thermostat on the fresh water side, the raw water side flows freely and dumps in to the exhaust, so you don’t want a thermostat or anything to block flow there.
