Bmc 3.8l

Hi,

I’m wondering if anyone has any idea of the fuel efficiency of a BMC 3.8l 4 cylinder engine? Approximate LPH would be very useful!

Thanks for looking

Re: Bmc 3.8l

You can get close without knowing anything about the specific engine. It's a four-stroke diesel. In the general case, diesels use between 0.4 and 0.5 pounds of fuel per horsepower per hour. Your diesel is 65 HP, so taking 0.5 pounds per horsepower, 32.5 pounds per hour. Diesel weighs about 6.5 pounds per gallon, so, 5.0 gallons per hour running wide open. That's 19 liters per hour.

But, that's wide open, and you probably don't do that. De-rate your engine according to RPM, assuming you are properly propped. At 45 HP, that's 13 liters/hour.

Then, your engine is more likely closer to 0.4 pounds per horsepower, so at 45 HP you would use 10.5 liters/hour.

Ultimately, fill the tank, motor, fill the tank.
