Beta 43 vs Yanmar 3JH noise levels?

(I did some searching, so if this has been discussed and I missed it, my apologies)

My Universal M50 (Kubota v1902) has died a sad death and I am looking for a new engine for my Tashing Baba 40 (Full keel, 30K lbs displacement). We are narrowed down to either the Beta 43 (Kubota v2003, 4 cyl 43 hp@2800 RPM) or the Yanmar 3JH5E (3 cyl 39 hp @3000 RPM.) The 4 cyl Yanmar won't fit so it was eliminated from consideration.

My question has to do with noise and engine "note". Our Universal is unpleasantly loud when motoring and tended to vibrate the whole boat. Can anybody comment on the volume and sound of the Beta vs. the Yanmar? Should I expect the new Beta to be any quieter or vibrate less than the old Universal M50?

thanks,
Dave.

Re: Beta 43 vs Yanmar 3JH noise levels?

For posterity, here is the data I gathered:

Make Model HP RPM 80%_RPM 80% HP Mount_width Overall_width Length Cyl CID Weight
Universal M50 44 3000 2400 38 16 22.9 36 4 115 545
Beta 43 43 2800 2240 28 17.75 20.5 37.75 4 122 524
Beta 38 38 3600 2880 28 16.25 20 35.25 4 91 370
Yanmar 3JH5E 38.5 3000 2400 27 16.5 20.4? 30.3 3 100 410
Yanmar 4JH5E 53 3000 2400 36 20.9 24.2 / 26 34 4 134 505

Also attached as an image for easier reading.

Note that the "80% HP" number is the HP indicated by the manufacturer at 80% of max RPM, not 80% of max HP.

Re: Beta 43 vs Yanmar 3JH noise levels?

I have a Beta 43 in my 44' ketch and it is much quieter than the Perkins 4-108 it replaced.
BUT engine noise is a complicated thing, exhaust system, mounts, drive train and even the shape of the engine compartment all have an influence. An engine that purrs like a kitten in one boat may roar like a lion in another.
