Beta 20 cooling system drain cock.

Hi all, my 1st. post here although I have been following for a while.

I was reading on this forum that some members were having trouble draining the fresh water system via the drain cock/tap on their Beta engines. I experienced the same blockage and could not get mine to let out one drop. A good friend suggested using a length of bicycle brake cable about 25cm long attached to a drill and feeding into the drain hole elbow. I first removed the dipstick which allowed me to remove the part that the t screw goes into then I started the cable into the hole and started the drill , the cable was drawn into the hole and the filthy old cooling water started to gush out.
Hope this helps anyone out there.

Cheers, Gordon Mac

Welcome aboard CF, Gordon Mac. Great advice in your first post

I am surprised though that the cooling system did not contain a antifreeze/anticorrosion coolant. Sounds like a good flush is in order!

Re: Beta 20 cooling system drain cock.

Hi Wotname, wolfgal and GordMay,
I only bought the boat in July 2020 and decided to clean the cooling system as the engine is now 12 years old. I tried everything apart from removing an engine mounting which might have allowed me to remove the elbow, but decided against that in case I damaged the threads on the engine block or destroyed the elbow. The system had antifreeze protection, but the pencil anode in the heat exchanger end plate was completely disolved, I also removed the heat exchanger tube and was amazed so many of the tubes were blocked or narrowed down. I am presuming lack of maintenance over the years. I have taken videos and photos and I will try to add, but I am not the brightest when it comes to tecnology.

Fair winds, Gordon Mac.

Re: Beta 20 cooling system drain cock.

Welcome to the forum Gordon,
Check the anode in your HX fairly frequently as some Betas chew them out pretty fast. They are not a cheap item. Had a similar problem with draincock in our raw water -cooled yanmar, rammed ss wire up it to clear.

Re: Beta 20 cooling system drain cock.

Thanks all, as soon as I can or am allowed I will post videos/pics on a new thread. Hi Compass 790 I bought 3 new pencil anodes, so I will change every 6 months and change coolant at the winter haulout every year. Hi Wolfgal I wont forget to post.

Fair winds, Gordon Mac.

I would look at the heat exchanger anode after 2 months. You change them depending on how far gone they are. Yanmar says 50% gone its time to change but we usually go to 75%.
If you keep your boat at a dock with fresh water hose handy a good thing to do is put a hose connector tee & a valve in the salt water intake to flush the system with fresh water after use if you can be bothered.
Good luck with it.

Re: Beta 20 cooling system drain cock.

Beta 20. Drained coolant from the original drain hole but had to drill through a bunch of brown rusty sludge. Seems common. working a drill bit by hand to get things moving. Performed heat exchanger service, tapping many times lightly to remove the cooling stack. Disconnected propeller shaft and jacked up front of the engine. Removed front right engine mount. Installed 90° fitting. Put everything back. The fitting doesn't interfere with anything. It works. Now coolant flushing can be done more easily.
