Best How to Remove Exhaust Manifold bolts

This guy speaks the truth, important lessons handed down from experienced mechanics so you dont learn from your own mistakes! The loosen/tighten is the most important part.

Wow! That was like a graduate course in rusty bolt removal. Thank you for posting it, Flyingfin.

I liked that a lot. Patience and feel. And strong tools that keep their shape. There is a world of difference between six and twelve point sockets.

Did anybody watch ALL SEVENTEEN MINUTES of that video?
How about making a "Readers Digest" version

Yeah, pretty common with these videos. But it is good, especially for the newbie.

Re: Best How to Remove Exhaust Manifold bolts

Great video and worth every minute of the 17. I am currently working on putting two new engines on a Cessna 414 aircraft and these tips are great for removing turbo bolts and exhaust manifold bolts. And as our colleague on this august forum states "Never let anything mechanical let you know that you are in a hurry". Kudos to tkiethlu for this wisdom.

Thank you, Exctyengr. That comment on human-machine interaction used to be a small sign on the instrument panel of my Varga 2150. I gave up flying to build a boat.

Varga is a great fun aircraft. I gave up flying when I turned 70 and the insurance company upped my rate to the stratospheric levels. Love that quote!

Re: Best How to Remove Exhaust Manifold bolts

Great video. That guy knows how to communicate, ie, teach.

Subscribed to his channel.

One should watch all 17 minutes. He had good pieces of information sprinkled through the whole video. As he says, have patience.

The Readers Digest version, do "younger" people even know what that refers too, is to put a penetrating oil on the bolt, have patience, loosen or try too, have patience, tighten or try too, have patience, and repeat but have patience. Heat if required. Have patience.

Watching his technique is pretty helpful or one could just break the bolt. Have patience.

Later,
Dan

Re: Best How to Remove Exhaust Manifold bolts

I was walking someone through removing some bolts on his outboard a couple of weeks ago and gave him the same advice. I also suggested that, "If you think it's hard removing these bolts with the head on, just imagine what it's going to be like if you break them off."

Re: Best How to Remove Exhaust Manifold bolts

I watched all 17 fascinating minutes. Then sent it to my older son who watched it all too.
A few months ago we had an exhaust stud snapped off in a moped block. By a previous owner. Pblaster and two weeks patience repeated application a bit of heat from time to time and the ole double nut trick and it came right out. No trouble.

17 minutes is NOTHING compared to how long it takes to drill out a bolt.
Especially if you snap off an EZout in it. I’ve managed to avoid doing that so far.

Re: Best How to Remove Exhaust Manifold bolts

Was talking to my dad a few days ago and he has some bolts that are seized. He just mentioned this in passing so I repeated what the guy in the video said.

Thanks for posting it.

Snapped off an EZout in an exhaust bolt the first time I used one. Come to think of it, that was the first exhaust bolt I'd removed. Found out an EZout was harder than my drill bits.
