Beneteau 311 - Fuel Gauge Access

Hello everyone, first post here,
Iím getting a constant full reading on my fuel gauge and am getting ready to test the system to find the problem. What is the easiest way to access the backside of the gauge on a Beneteau 311 pedestal? Iíve been searching for an exploded view but canít seem to find it. I really donít want to start taking a bunch of stuff apart that I donít have to in order to gain access. Thanks for any advice you can give.

Re: Fuel Gauge Access

Hmm, I would start at the other end and take the sender unit out for a clean first.

Re: Fuel Gauge Access

Thanks for the advice. That’s the plan. Start at sender, clean and do ohm check. If good, check wires to gauge. If good, check connections at back of gauge. Just trying to know what is needed to access back of gauge if it gets that far. Looks like the only way to access is to remove the Yanmar instrument panel. Is that all there is to gaining access to gauge?

I have edited your initial post to try and catch an owner because this is a quite specific question, though a couple of photos of your console might help to see if another owner has one fitted to a different boat.

Re: Beneteau 311 - Fuel Gauge Access

Greetings and welcome aboard the CF, J.

Basic Engine Gauge Theory and Testing ➥ https://www.cruisersforum.com/forums....html#post2597

Fuel Gauge Testing:

1. Disconnect [Pink*] Sender Wire from Gauge, and turn power ON.
The Fuel Gauge should read ZERO Scale (< Empty)

2. Short the Gauge Sender Terminal to Ground.
The Gauge should read FULL Scale (> Full).

3. Measure resistance of [Pink] Sender Wire to Ground.
American Floats: 240 Ohms (Empty), 103 Ohms (Ĺ Full), & 33 Ohms (Full)
European Floats: 10 Ohms (Empty), 95 Ohms (Half), & 180 Ohms (Full)
Automotive & other Float Switches may use other resistances such as 0 - 90 Ohm, 73 - 10 Ohm, & etc.

* Pink is North American standard wire colour for fuel gauge sender wire.

Re: Beneteau 311 - Fuel Gauge Access

Thanks for the help and advice. It’s working again. Ended up being dirty spade connectors at the sender. Cleaned and reconnected. Working like a champ.
