Antifoul for an OUTBOARD ??

Hey,
I have an older Bristol 27, the outboard is in a well. It cannot be lifted out of the water.
Question, do people ever put antifoul on an outboard?? If so , what would you use. Or is there a specific product for that?

Or do I just keep it clean by scrubbing it throughout the summer?

Whatever you do, don't use a copper bottom paint on an aluminum OB. Even if you manage to put a great barrier coat on first, inevitable scratches, dings, etc will provide a great path for corrosion.

Can you bag it? That should keep it very clean.

Bagging is a good possibility. Still, the lower end can suffer from corrosion. One other option is what this B27 owner did; cutting a notch in the transom to allow the engine to tilt up. It may not be aesthetically pleasing, but it saves the engine from corrosion and growth, and you'll go faster sailing too.

If you can modify it so the lower unit is fully out of the water, it's great...no antifoul issues.

thanks, i have seen that, afraid to cut into the hull though. But something i might have to do.

Years ago I did it to my Columbia 24 that had a similar well set-up and I was glad I did. The previous owner had a 6hp in the well, with anti-fouling paint on it, and just left it there for months. It was in bad shape as a result. When I got a new engine I cut a notch that matched the shape of the lower end that came up there in the transom. Engine was fine and boat was faster, and no problems structurally to the hull. Check atomvoyages.com, the gentleman there modifies boats like the B27 in just this way too.

I modified my PDQ so that the outboard would pull up farther, to reduce strikes under sail.


Surely, this is worth the effort.
