Re: Another Perkins Problem

Found an oil pump, got it ordered along with a gasket set. Next job is to clean everything up with diesel and clean my bilges. Messy work!

Re: Another Perkins Problem

Since the engine's out anyway you might as well pull the bearing caps and take a look.

Even if the shells are perfect it was still worth looking just to check the oversizes.

Absolutely. Don't pass up this opportunity to make sure the crank and bearings and seals are in good shape. Would be a shame to put it back in the boat and run into bottom end problems a few hrs. later.

Re: Another Perkins Problem

I posted a link to this UK company weeks ago in another thread - found them after chimping around on Google for a couple of minutes. Still no connection with them but I might try sending them an invoice...

Perkins 4.108 : Parts4Engines: Perkins Diesel Engine Overhaul Kits and Spares

Whenever I want to buy anything it's always 50% dearer here in the UK than anywhere else on the frocking planet. Makes a refreshing change to find something that looks cheap in the UK.

Oh yes, nearly forgot. Found a company selling reconditioned cranks for £350 if anyone needs one.

Re: Another Perkins Problem

I will do everything I can. Like you say, it's been a big job getting the engine out so I may as well crack on. I'm learning too, which is good. Every day is a school day!

Re: Another Perkins Problem

As long as the pan is off, you should at least randomly check your bearings. Low pressure could have caused excessive wear. Plastic gauge is cheap. Also, there is a replacement rear main seal made that is advertized to solve rear main leaks on 4108s. I intend to try one.

Re: Another Perkins Problem

Ok, problem. The pump has arrived and it's the wrong one. Doh! It fits fine, but slightly different. On my engine, the deep bit of the sump is under the pump, so the pump has a metal pipe coming directly out of the bottom of it to which the gauze ect connects. This pump that has arrived is designed to have the deep bit on the other side of the engine, do there is a threaded hole on the side of the pump instead of the bottom. I have hit a brick wall. Anyone got any ideas? Help please........

If it's like this ebay one

perkins engines oil lift pump new | eBay

It looks like the pick-up pipe might just screw in - if that's what you meant - in which case just swap them after cleaning your original one thoroughly.
If that's not correct could you post a pic?
