Albin Vega gearbox

Good day cruisers,

Firstly, I'm happy to report that I am a proud new owner of an Albin Vega 27, which I am eagerly outfitting to take me to distant tropical places.

Now I've noticed in all the manuals that the gear box is referred to as a "Reverse Gear". The "Volvo Penta Mono Shift Reverse Gear" to be exact. Not that I am having any issues with the system, but I'm very curious as to why this is called a Reverse Gear? Perhaps it is just a term used for "gear box" or "Transmission" that I've never heard of. Is there any difference between a Reverse gear and any other Gearbox? I'm sure it's a simple answer, but Google is of little help at the moment.

it's a great boat, had one for 5 years, would have kept it but it has 5-10 headroom and I need 5-11. eventually drove me nuts.

mine had a variable pitch prop, not a gear box. it changed pitch and changed from forward to reverse and back by just moving the single lever. it also had a feather position which stood the blades straight up and down, just about eliminating prop drag.
