Same engine. The running method makes a big mess in mine. Did it once and cleaned up oil for days.

I went back to doing it the old way and remove the glow plugs and hand turn. 30 minute job, but it is leisurely and no mess or fuss.

With a rebuilt head, I check it twice a year regardless and part of my engine mounted oil/fuel filter changes.

The manufactures instructions for my Hinos are the same as other 6 cylinder diesels I've worked on. You use the 3 timing marks on the flywheel, on each mark 4 valves can be adjusted, simple & no guess work. It may also be time to re-torque the head bolts, if it is do that 1st & then do the valves.
