adding intake silencer to ysb8

Has anyone ever added an intake silencer to a yanmar ysb8? at present there is just a curved pipe wide open bends back over engine. Wondering if it would quiet down the engine let alone protect sucking anything into the intake.

How creative do you want to be? K&N makes a whole line of filters that will fit on the end of a hose.. I ran a 2.5" hose a couple of feet into a corner and put a round K&N filter on the end. It made a very noticeable difference in noise.
