Adding gauges to a Yanmar 2GM20 w Type A panel
Hi
I have a Yanmar 2GM20 with a Type A panel. So, no info on anything, basically.
I would like to add a Multi LCD-display that I found that can show RPM, Temp and oil pressure.
I noticed that my engine does have the RPM-sensor fitted, so I assume that one is just to connect and set the instrument to the correct ratio setting.
But what about temp and oilpressure? I assume the "sensors" now are switches, that light the warning lights and busser. So, what type of sensors do I need and where to fit them? Are there any available "slots" to use, or must I replace the original switches?

2GM20 or 2GM20F? Do you have an original panel?

I would want to retain the alarms, not replace them with a display that I would probably not be looking at when something went south. So retain the switches on the engine and add the appropriate sensors.

Your plan has given me pause to reconsider my options too. I have a 2GM20F with the “poverty pack” panel that’s about finished due to sun exposure and have a reasonably new B panel from a 4JHE yanmar that I was going to wire up to the little 2GM. Temp and oil senders and switches are with the the panel but the tacho is going to be a pain. It’s a tooth counter like yours and I’m going from a more teeth ring gear to a less teeth ring gear The tach senders are the same but the tach heads are different and my old tachhead is rusted to extinction and until I read your post , I was resigned to looking at an in accurate reading on the 4JH tach and adding a correction to arrive at my true engine rpm. Your digital display might be the solution. The little ol 2GM will be like a rat with a gold tooth if I install an after market digital display…… but it just might be the path of least resistance. What display are you considering installing?

The multi display have setable alarms, so that's no reason to retain the old ones, though I am happy to keep them if possible.
Here's the display I'm thinking of.

Apparently the same unit but with a different user interface is sold under the name KUS KMG-30 in the US.

Biltema, where I will by my unit sells all their stuff under their own brand name and basically always with some unique features or design.

I like it! ….Would I be right in thinking that the display is around $200 US?

You might check with AC DC Marine. They have a tach that is adjustable for various ring gear tooth counts.

Yanmar "B" panel is tach only with lights. For the tach you need to know how many teeth are on the ring gear and compare that to the number on the Tach face. If you have a 4Jh it probably says P=127 I think the smaller GM series were P=93. Yanmar sensors are BSPT threaded so make sure your senders are the same. the senders have different ohm ranges than either NA or EU standards which means they have to be matched to the gauges.

Re: Adding gauges to a Yanmar 2GM20 w Type A panel
I have a Yanmar 3GM30F, You can pull the oil pressure light sender and replace it with a double one like this from Bosch, you have to trim the nuts to have good clearance for the alternator belt but mine is good after 7 years.

If it's fresh water cooled there are several locations you can add a water temp sender.
Most diesel universal tachs have a tooth count adjustment on the back.

I had a Yanmar 2qm15 with no dash panel so I just made my own. Easy to do and you can set it up however you like.
