Adding air filter to Universal 5424

I'm sure I've read about people replacing the crude air intake box on Universal 5424 (and others in the range, 5418, and so on) with a proper air filter (ie, KNN).


Has anyone done this, and if so, what part did you use?


My main goal is noise reduction. A lot of noise comes out of that box.

Don't restrict air flow or you'll have other problems. You can add sound proofing to the engine enclosure. And you can add sound proofing to the enclosure intake as long as it doesn't restrict the air flow. A K&N filter is porous and probably won't have a big effect on the sound.

If you have room you could build a box with baffles and sound proofing as long as you don't restrict air flow. Keep in mind what you've done so when a mechanic is called for surging, erratic running, lost of fuel, overheating... you can mention you restricted the air flow.

I put an oiled foam air filter on our Yanmar ysm8 to replace the silencer just because i wanted an air-filter on the engine. Can't say i can notice any difference in the noise level but it's a very noisy single
Will post a link to what i fitted but it's probably way too small for yr engine
