no way we can't get back to pick it up as we already were 6 to 7 hrs of sailing from the marina...
BRAVO...
(just a question: are you smart or did that happened to you also?)

If it was a 4 stroke, maybe no oil in crankcase and low oil cut off switch would not allow fire... ?
Novice operator had mounted the BBQ grill rather then an outboard to the dingy in his confusion?

Simply willing the outboard motor to start proved frustrating, and resulted in existential crisis>?

FWIW,
Shrew and I both had the right answer in the first 2 replies...

Re: A Quiz for the Experts Only: Why Couldn't the Outboard Engine Run ?
Shouldn't this be posted in the Sailor's Confessional instead?

That's funny. Definately a Sailors Confessional post.
Priceless!

In fact we were so proud of us being able to put the tender in the water and install the engine and having the two of us in the dinghy safely...
and only at that time, when I was about to prepare to start the engine, I saw we didn't have the tank and hose!!
we were laughing so much we almost get in the water...
But we know how to get the dinghy in the water and back.. at least..

When I told the Admiral we could not start the engine because the tank and hose were still at home, she asked if that was really necessary to have them with us...

Yes, a good sailor's confessional post. Congratulations on the new tender and outboard solutions. Check lists are good.
I was going to go racing with my newly built sailing dinghy once and left the daggerboard at home. But I think your post beats that one.
kind regards,

And here I was thinking it's because Neptune hates champagne (Being Roman).
By the way, you could have done one worse and let go before trying to start the engine. I'm amazed how often I see people doing that...
