4108 Perkins ?- Route Crankcase Breather Tube To...

Has anyone routed the crankcase breather tube from the manifold filter cover to the inside of the filter or the manifold to create a negative crankcase pressure in order to reduce seal leakage? I read this thread : Blow-by Causing Oil Leaks - Cruisers & Sailing Forums , but it is not specific to the "new" 4108 that vents the valve cover to the intake filter cover(but not inside the strainer media).
I would appreciate your thoughts without getting into the runaway diesel aspect.

Search the forums under "Perkins 4.108 Air Filter" and you should find several references to this. In short, many folks have done it and it works fine for engines in good condition. Not sure what would happen if oil started getting into the engine that way, but in a good condition engine blowby is minimal and not a problem.

I like that setup. I have about 6 " from the top of the manifold to the seat that is over the engine. What is the filter? Thats exactly what I need or if the filter is too tall I could get a 2 1/4" 90 degree exhaust pipe elbow for attachment.

Looks like a primitive PCV system.

Not sure I would advise such a system for a diesel unless you had some method of filtering out any oil droplets or vapour that might cause a run away condition. Once you have had one run away you wouldn't want it again.

Hard to describe but I am wondering about a modification to the above idea.

Hose one from crankase to top of a "can"
Can houses a submergible oil screen or filter
Hose one dumps into center of filter - filtered air is taken off near top and side of can and plumbed to engine air inlet with no significant oil content
Hose 3 is taken off center bottom of can and is plumbed to oil pan returning "bulk" oil

The downside is this can really mask lots of blow by that may indicate impending engine issues.

Glen, thats an excellent point but the stock system plumbs in the blow-by into the cannister where the filter media is a screen with 1/16' or so holes. I had already thought of using a puke bottle arrangment to catch excess oil as the engine wears. I have always feared a runaway engine. That fear has a flat piece of wood tied to the intake and a loose airfilter so that the engine can be stalled within seconds of a runaway condition.

+1 on the Walker AirSep. Definitely the way to go.

I fitted one to my 4-108 eight years ago, and couldn't be happier with the result. Helped with leaks and also a MUCH cleaner engine room.

Walker air-sep.....the rest is just jury rigging

Universal diesels run a tube next to air intake horn.

Some Yanmars run a hose to the manifold....but there is a coalescing component in the valve cover
