Re: 4 stroke outboard fuel consumption???

I have a sailboat and a 15hp 4-stroke engine which are quite similar. It measures 29 feet and weighs 3.5 tons with a Swedish sail drive SD330 fitted with a YAMAHA 15HP 4-stroke outboard engine head.
Consumption depends a lot on the cleanliness of the hull.
But at 5 knots, they are only on the order of 0.5 liters (0.132 gallons) per nautical mile.

Re: 4 stroke outboard fuel consumption???

I installed a tachometer but it is mainly the speed of the boat that I regulate. The engine does not consume too much if I do not exceed 5.5 knots (3000 to 3200 rpm). Your boat is a little smaller at the waterline and it may be 5.3 knots to aim for. I have a good Flex-O-Fold propeller that allows me to hit almost 7 knots at full blast. To stop stressing, I installed a very precise flowmeter that allows me to know the instantaneous and total consumption (conrad.com).
But I have the workshop manual for my engine which gives engine consumption figures that look like what I'm measuring:
Max consumption at 10CV load and 5000 rpm: 0.77 gallons / h
Max consumption at 15CV load and 5000 rpm: 1.17 gallons / h
Max speed at full speed: 4000 to 4500 rpm

Re: 4 stroke outboard fuel consumption???

Can you slow down, and ride the tides? That will cut a lot of fuel consumption.

At least, don't waste fuel bucking the tide, unless you absolutely have to.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned motor sailing. Especially if you have a roller furling jib, you can cut your fuel consumption by half, or more, if you can keep a jib full. You can go much closer to the wind, when you motor sail, than with wind alone.
Ride the tides, and motor sail. You might get there with fuel to spare.

You can call the First Nations where you might fill up, be, and promise to be, respectful, explain your situation, stay on your boat, etc, and ask for one special fill up.

Most First Nations have a website. Read their covid information on the website first, just so you know how they're coping.
