4-108 seawater pump

Changed the impeller in the Sherwood water pump">raw water pump today. In pulling the old impeller out the shaft could move in & out approx. 1/2 inch. I don't think that is supposed to happen but I've never had one apart. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

PUMP

I have a Sherwood G65 on my 4-108 as well. The play you mention is ok. There are two bearings in the pump and they arnt a very tight fit into the pump housing. They are pressed onto the shaft however. Its not really anything to worry about, new pumps (G65) are the same way.
When you replace the impeller be sure to lube the keyway, shaft and impeller before you reassemble.

Good Luck

I replaced the impeller on my 4-108. The previous owner reported the engine tended to over heat. The old impeller was missing 3/4 of one blade. This was found lodged in the intake pipe just behind the impeller. No more over heating problems now.

Thank you for the info. The reason I was concerned is that I have changed impellers a few times on boats I've owned in the past but don't recall this much shaft play. Maybe I've become more observant in my old age.
