Does it 'fix' itself after a certain period of time? I.e. does the display repower?

Re: 3ym20 Yanmar instrument panel start button won't start

I had this problem in aging wiring on my Yanmar that developed high resistance. The cheapest fix that has worked for over 10 years for me is to add relay on the starter. Move the wire that energizes the start solenoid to to the relay coil. Have the relay make a direct connection between the + battery on the starter and the solenoid terminal. Add aground for the relay coil. The relay coil draws much less current than the solenoid coil. I used a cheap automotive horn relay.

I have often found a measured voltage at a device only to have it either disappear or the device does nothing as soon as the activating switch is thrown. A corroded connection can often pass a voltage but break when a current tries to go thru.

No fixing itself ... I have to do start sequence again.

That is good news. I can email you a copy of the 3YM20 / 30 service manual if you like (PM me with an email address).

You did fool us in the first post though .

Thanks to you wotname, and others who patiently guided me to the solution. I do have the information manual on YM maintenance. Lesson learned this are to carefully listen and understand the issues involved. Yes, I erroneously thought my engine battery was charged when in fact that was a surface charge that masked the fact that the battery lacked the needed capacity to turn the starter. I replaced the engine battery and problem solved.

Ahh...the joys of boat ownership. One ends up learning more about systems than one ever imagined. Unless one has deep pockets and stays close to larger towns and cities, one learns to manage and repair everything needed to have a good life.

Regarding your Yanmar engine, I don't know if you have the operators manual or a service manual or something provided your boat manufacturer. If you don't have the Yanmar service manual, I would encourage you to get it. IMO, Yanmar writes good manual and the YM series has 200+ pages full of information about all aspects of the engine. You might not need it now but one day.......
