Re: 1996 Mercruiser 454 with electric fuel pump

A slow turning of the engine and a clicking noise is typical a nearly dead battery causing solenoid chatter.

Re: 1996 Mercruiser 454 with electric fuel pump

Update😳
Bought the new fuel pump and relay, but still no luck on getting the engine back on.
I can see that the carburetor is getting fuel from the right pipe on top of the carb. So is anyone aware of this issue?
I have read online that when the carb. Sits over the holidays they have a Tendenz to dry out, does it mean that I have to take apart the carb?

Re: 1996 Mercruiser 454 with electric fuel pump

So, if the fuel pump is running with the key on, and there is fuel in the hose up to the carb, it sounds like the float is stuck closed.

How long were the “holidays”?

Will the engine fire if you spray a SMALL amount of starting fluid into the carb?

I tried to spray ignition spray directly in the fuel intake on top of the carburetor, with no luck.
Our holidays where 3 weeks

I will upload a video sequence later today, that shows fuel going in the carb.

If the engine did not fire with ether directly into the carb, I feel you need to look somewhere else for your problem.

You are not getting spark. Can you confirm spark?

I’m not going to pull out a spark plug in the engine room. Simply because I do not dare with all the fumes in such a small area.

You should be ventilating before attempting to start anyway.

But I’ll say again…..if the engine doesn’t try to run with starting fluid, it’s not time to open up the carb.

Yes I know, but I think it is a coil or ignition problem

Is the boat in the water? There is a risk of raw water flooding the engine as a result of overcranking.
How did we get from an MPI in the OP to a Carburettor in post 33,35 and 36

Re: 1996 Mercruiser 454 with electric fuel pump

Hi Pete
Im not expert in engines. But my engine is rebuild from the original belt driven fuel pump to a electric fuel pump. That is what I mean by mpi. Not sure if this is the right expression. But yesterday we found out most of the gasket on the carburetor was leaking. So the carburetor is now of and a friend will replace the whole kit. Hope this make sense?

Re: 1996 Mercruiser 454 with electric fuel pump

Update
Yesterday a friend who is mechanic helped with troubleshooting.
We found out the engine got fuel and the spark plugs was working. So the carburetor was the issue. Gaskets was leaking and the engine was overfloded with fuel. We where able to start it but it just sounded wrong and a lot of smoke due to the large amount of fuel. So today I’ll get at replacement set of gaskets and the will be replaced. So I hope this will solve the problems.

I’m happy to hear you got er going and had no hydrolock issue from all the cold cranking, sounds like you’re almost ready to go.
