1989 volvo diesel 2002

to the ones who knows :
I being having lot a trouble with my engine 1989 Volvo diesel 2002 ,after careful 80/20 analysis ,I found out most of my time up-keeping is fixing the friking engine ,even thought only 500 hours on it is 25 years old .at this point planing to install a bracket and used my dingy outboard (yamaha 6HP) as plan B for a beneteaou 32s5 and maybe eventually remove the diesel and install a bigger outboard 15-20
so the question
removing the internal diesel will change the performance (is engine weight count as ballast ?
what the size and specs for an outboard to do similar function and alternatives methods to generate electricity since outboards produce so little
thanks in advanced your experience opinions had being invaluable in the past

Have you considered having a pro fix the engine? Have you considered having a pro rebuild the engine? How about replacing the engine with a newer model of similar weight and power?

I would consider all these options before I started changing the dynamics of the boat.

Lots written about these lousy engines (2000 series). Repower with another diesel.

The 2000 series does not a great reputation. However, many have used them extensively and apparently there are just a couple minor things that improve their reliability greatly. There was a lot of info in a forum thread last year if you can find it.
I too would hire a pro to try to get yours up to snuff.
Believe, me... using an outboard is a PITA. Leaning over the back to get it started, banging elbows on the pulpit in the process, prop coming out of the water in choppy seas, adjusting the throttle.... in addition, you will devalue your boat resale extensively.

And when I say hire a pro, I mean one from an authorized Volvo shop, not just a guy with some tools and a truck.
