1984 Evinrude Outboard with 2 Wire Connector

Hi,

We just bought a 22' sailboat and it came with an outboard motor. The previous owner never used, so we weren't even sure it would run. Turns out that it runs fine.

The engine has a 2 wire female connector coming out of the front. I'm wondering the purpose of it (I assume to provide power to something?) and how we can use it? Can it be used to charge the batteries?

Any info would be helpful - searching the net hasn't given me much to go on so far.

Thanks

You will need to measure the voltage across the terminals to know if they are suitable for charging. You will need 14.5 VDC for charging and you may find that the output varies. It may or may not have a regulator in the charge circuit.
Charging with the outboard is not a very efficient way of charging the battery as you don't run for long enough. The theory is sound enough but in practice iit s not.

assuming those are the charger wires, they should help to charge the batteries... not a lot of out put but some! and on a 22 footer , that may be enough to help out.!

Smaller outboards usually have an unregulated AC (not DC) lighting output; not suitable for battery charging.

Thanks for the replies. I'll test it with a meter and see what I get.
